Final Coach’s Corner

Hi Folks,
Can you believe it’s over?! We went through 12 exciting weeks of track and field action and we’re now done for the summer. Of course there are still some meets. And I know some of you will attend them. Just let me know when you do. Especially if I’m not there.
The 41st Annual Frank Kelly Memorial Meet is in the books. We got done in one hour and 45 minutes for over 100 kids and 72 events. Basically the amount of time “That other club” takes to run two events. But whatever. Thanks to all who helped either under the tent, behind the scenes or on the field and track. Everything went smoothly and efficiently. I hope everyone got their ribbons. On Thursday it looked like Mother Nature was going to kick us to Saturday but that was not the case. Tip o’ the Bullhorn to Boston United, Youth Enrichment Services Track Team of South Boston and the South Shore Firebolts and Coach Heike Tuplin for all coming with solid crews.
The Annual TAFU Pizza Party was again, a blast. Held at the Kennedy Senior Center over 150 kids, parents and staff were treated to pizza and all the kids got their certificates. Special Perfect Attendance Honors went to Daithi Quinn, Joey Burke and Alex Giaquinto. Anyone who was invited and missed it don’t worry. Your certificate will be at the Banquet in October. Special Thanks to Council on Aging Director Tom Clasby and his trusty assistant Linda Bowes.
Someone turned in a Jogathon Sponsor sheet with no name on it so I have no idea who the kid is who gets those valuable four points. The donors on the sheet include Noel DiBona, Dan Molloy, Alexis McLean, Hope Grassi and Scott Curran. Anyone who can do the forensics on this, send me an email. Thanks!
Thanks to the Catrambone family for donating metal rods to help keep our green hurdles from tipping over in the wind. The situation wreaked havoc at The Needham Youth Classic. Special thanks to the Clements family for donating water and gatorade at the Future Stars and Kelly Meets. Finally thanks to all who signed Ben Shapiro’s get well card. Charlotte Shapiro has been in the club since she’s nearly been in diapers. Who could forget her heroic race at the State Hershey meet in Hudson. This fall she’ll be at Buckingham, Brown and Nichols. Ben was a football and track star out on Long Island way back when, as well as a Vietnam Vet. For you real football officionados he play on the same high school football team as John Mackey. The Baltimore Colts John Mackey. We all wish Ben, Kerry and Charlotte the best.
August track events coming up include Weymouth Wednesday August 3rd at Weymouth HS 5:30pm registration, Thursday August 4th Nantasket Beach Run 4 miler right on the beach. I did this last year – awesome! 6:00pm registration. Also sign up on Racewire. On Wednesday August 10th Boston United is hosting their Future Stars Meet at Madison Park HS right behind the Reggie Lewis Center beginning at 6:00pm. Check the USATF-NE Schedule to get information. Special Thanks to Boston Parks and Rec Head Honcho Barbara Hamilton for putting this one together. They came to ours, we should go to theirs. The next day (Thursday August 11th) Westwood Track Club is hosting another meet, this time at Westwood HS beginning at 6:00pm. On Thursday August 18th the Y.E.S. Program of South Boston will host the Martin Richard Memorial Races. Little Martin lost his life in the Marathon Bombings and his poster “No More Hating People – Peace” still brings a tear to my eye and to others around the world. We totally need to be there. Martin ran in our Kelly meet back when it was at Archies. The meet only offers the 400 – 800 and mile but I think we can all take part. The meet info flyer is on our website. There are adapted race divisions as well. The only criterion is that runners who “need assistance” are eligible.
Banquet info will go out on Labor Day weekend or just prior. Fall Cross Country info will go our then as well. Please enjoy the rest of the summer. Email or text with questions any time. We are a great program because of folks like YOU! Remind your children that they are part of something great with a deep history of success that we add to every year.

Coach’s Corner 06/26/2016

Hello everyone. Hope everyone is enjoying this spate of beautiful weather. Belated father’s day to all the dads in the club. The Farmer’s Market is open starting friday 6/24 up at Pageant. Lets review some things that happened and look to the future as well.
Squirrel Run: Congrats to all who participated. I was at the High School New Englands with Quincy High’s superstar Mike Munroe down in New Britain Ct. Mike was 2nd place in the shot-put, not too shabby. Word is that the turnout for the Squirrel Run was larger than normal. The sadness behind all of this is that Race organizer Rich “Ratt” Kennedy has himself been afflicted with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). I made it my business to stop by Pageant at 6:30am Saturday morning to see Ratt before our jaunt to New Britain. It would have been bad karma to not. This awful disease has already stuck down his brother Jimmy “Squirrel” and his dad, long time Quincy School Committeeman Christopher Kennedy. Squirrel run was worth 3 points.
Flag Day Parade: Many participated here under the QTC colors, or those of one of the many other groups marching. I feel that we all teach kids how to run, jump, throw, tackle, cheer and everything else, but we drop the ball (Ha – sports pun) when it comes to basic citizenship. Nothing is more important than respect for the flag and when tough times hit the world (and when does it not?) the world turns to the United States. Plus who can argue that the fireworks display was nothing short of spectacular. If you marched and forgot to document that on the night of, or another day, don’t forget. It’s worth two points.
Corporate Challenge: We managed to hit our numbers on the volunteers (54) and we were done in record time. Special thanks go out to Conventures Inc for the usual great organizational framework – not telling us we got moved up a block notwithstanding! Also kudos to the Corrections Department from Suffolk County for supplying workers to help in the cleanup efforts. Weather was just about perfect for running or working. This was worth 4 points.
Jog-a-thon: Nice turnout of just over 100 for this annual joint venture with the Quincy Rotary Club. Sorry if you missed the team photos. Photos should be posted on the website soon. Thanks and a tip of the bullhorn to Joe Roux for his awesome photography. If you owe for Jogathon just grab a sponsor sheet off the table and turn it in with a minimum of $10 per family.
Needham meet: Unfortunately Needham has backed out of this annual competition. It is my hope that they will allow us to come to them for a friendly, but no word as I post this email.
Future Stars Meet: July 14 right at Faxon Field. The usual 2 hour romp with all the events. Got a box of free ribbons and a huge banner courtesy of USA Track & Field. Flyers out soon.
Want to know your kids points? Send me an email and I’ll tell you. Still haven’t done your fundraising? Take care of that first, then your point totals will be sent out.
See you all soon.
Coach Geoff

Megan Strong

Hello to all Parents, Members, Alumni, Friends,
We really need to rally the troops, to circle the wagons so to speak, to help a little girl who not so long ago wore the Blue and Gold of the QTC. Her name is Megan Mann and she is 12 years old. She is currently battling Leukemia. Her Facebook page is called Megan Strong, and she certainly is! The family is trying to raise some money for obvious reasons. Through our fantastic webmaster Mark Richards we will send out the message to all so we can all appreciate the Mann family’s plight and through digging deep into our wallets we can all ease the burden they are dealing with. The Manns are good friends of the Healy’s from Wollaston. Mia is a member of the North Quincy track program but no so long ago was a state champion in the Hershey Youth program in the 100 meters. Her sisters Alivia and Lola are members currently and father Jim and mom Lisa have supported our club any different ways over the years. Many donors to the cause are former QTC members or parents. Let’s help this little girl fight and win over her illness. I know you all will.

Thanks so Much!
